In 2025, West Nile virus infections have increased by 40% above typical levels in the United States, with over 770 reported cases, including around 490 severe ones. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) attributes the spike to a higher percentage of mosquitoes carrying the virus, influenced by warm, wet weather and infected bird populations. Colorado, particularly Fort Collins, has been notably affected.

In Europe, over 600 cases have been reported across nine countries, leading to 38 deaths. Italy has been the hardest hit, with 500 cases, followed by Greece, Serbia, and other countries. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has urged for immediate, coordinated mosquito control and public health strategies.

The surge in cases has prompted public health officials to increase surveillance and vector control measures. Residents in affected areas are advised to use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants, and eliminate standing water to reduce mosquito breeding sites. Health departments are also working to raise awareness about the symptoms of West Nile virus and the importance of early detection.
