Today, August 10, 2025, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Balıkesir Province in western Turkey, shaking the Marmara region and surrounding areas. The quake occurred in the early afternoon local time, toppling buildings and damaging infrastructure across 68 neighborhoods. Tremors were felt in nearby provinces, including İzmir, Çanakkale, and Bursa, prompting immediate concern for aftershocks. Authorities have classified it as a serious emergency, given the scale of structural damage and the number of affected residents.
Preliminary reports confirm one fatality and at least 29 injuries so far, though officials warn that casualty numbers may rise as search-and-rescue teams continue their work. Many of the injured are being treated for trauma, fractures, and other injuries from falling debris. Rescue crews are combing through collapsed structures, focusing on areas where people may still be trapped. The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has set up emergency response centers and is coordinating aid deliveries to impacted towns.
Emergency relief efforts are well underway. AFAD has deployed teams from multiple provinces, along with ambulances, heavy machinery, and mobile kitchens. The Turkish Red Crescent is providing tents, blankets, and food supplies to displaced families. Local hospitals have activated disaster protocols to handle the influx of patients, and national media is urging residents to stay away from damaged buildings and remain alert for aftershocks. The government has also temporarily suspended public transportation in affected areas to facilitate emergency vehicle access. Meanwhile, volunteers from neighboring regions have arrived to assist in relief efforts, demonstrating strong community solidarity in the wake of this disaster. International humanitarian organizations are also monitoring the situation and preparing to assist if requested.
