On October 10, 2025, a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck offshore near Manay town in Davao Oriental, southern Philippines. The quake occurred at 9:43 AM local time and was followed by a 6.8 magnitude aftershock approximately seven hours later. This sequence, known as a “doublet,” caused widespread panic and triggered tsunami warnings for coastal areas within 300 km of the epicenter, including parts of Indonesia and Palau. Fortunately, only minor wave activity was recorded, and the alerts were subsequently lifted.
The earthquake resulted in at least seven confirmed fatalities, with victims in Mati City, Pantukan town, and Davao City. Hundreds more were injured, and significant damage occurred to buildings, bridges, and roads. Notably, the Magsaysay Bridge in Butuan was damaged, while landslides buried several villagers in Pantukan. Rescue and relief operations have been launched, with authorities assessing the structural integrity of affected areas and coordinating emergency response efforts.
The Philippines, located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is highly susceptible to seismic activity. This recent quake follows a 6.9 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Cebu on September 30, 2025, which killed 69 people and caused extensive damage. Officials continue to monitor aftershocks and emphasize the importance of preparedness, urging residents to follow guidance from PHIVOLCS and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) to stay safe.
