In early October 2025, severe flooding and landslides struck parts of India and Nepal, causing widespread disruption and loss of life. Heavy monsoon rains led rivers in India’s Darjeeling region and Nepal’s eastern districts, including Ilam, to overflow, inundating villages, farmland, and transportation networks. The disaster resulted in over 70 fatalities, while hundreds of homes were submerged or damaged, leaving thousands displaced and in urgent need of shelter. Emergency services faced challenges navigating flooded areas, complicating rescue and relief operations.
The floods caused significant damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and public utilities, hampering communication and the delivery of essential supplies. Local governments, with assistance from national authorities, coordinated evacuation efforts, temporary shelters, and emergency medical services to protect affected populations. Landslides triggered by saturated slopes further threatened communities and disrupted access to remote villages, highlighting the region’s vulnerability to climate-induced disasters and the importance of early-warning systems and disaster preparedness.
In response to the crisis, authorities in India announced plans to explore a climate-linked insurance scheme aimed at providing quicker financial support to communities affected by floods and landslides. Humanitarian organizations and local agencies mobilized to provide food, clean water, medical aid, and temporary housing for displaced residents. Beyond immediate relief, the event has prompted discussions on long-term mitigation strategies, including improved river embankments, reforestation, and infrastructure planning, to reduce the impact of future floods and enhance resilience in vulnerable regions
