Northern India has experienced devastating flash floods in recent weeks, resulting in significant loss of life and widespread damage. On August 5, 2025, a cloudburst in the village of Dharali, Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, triggered a flash flood that swept away buildings and infrastructure. At least four people were killed, and more than 50 were reported missing, including soldiers stationed at a nearby camp. Rescue operations were launched, but heavy rain and challenging terrain hampered efforts .

In the following weeks, additional cloudbursts and landslides struck the region. On September 15–16, 2025, heavy rains led to flash floods and landslides in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, resulting in at least 18 deaths and 16 people reported missing. More than 900 residents were stranded as roads and bridges were destroyed by the floods .

The recurring nature of these disasters has raised concerns about the impact of climate change on the region. Experts attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of such events to climate-induced extreme weather patterns, highlighting the need for enhanced disaster preparedness and sustainable infrastructure development in vulnerable areas .
