In mid-September 2025, the city of Dehradun in Uttarakhand, India, was struck by a sudden and severe cloudburst that triggered intense flash floods and landslides across several neighborhoods, including Sahastradhara, Tapovan, and the IT Park area. The torrential downpour overwhelmed natural drainage channels, causing rivers and rivulets, most notably the Karligad, to overflow and wash away roads and bridges. The flooding disrupted transportation, severed access to critical areas, and left many residents stranded, while emergency services scrambled to evacuate people from the most affected zones.
The disaster resulted in at least 28 confirmed fatalities, with a number of individuals still reported missing. Many homes and businesses were inundated, and critical infrastructure, including water supply points, suffered extensive damage. The Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan (UJS) reported that 766 water supply points across the district were affected, with 98 still non-functional, complicating recovery efforts and leaving thousands of residents without reliable access to clean water.
Local authorities and disaster response teams launched rescue operations to reach stranded residents and provide immediate relief, while repair work on damaged bridges, roads, and water systems began. The estimated cost for repairing the damaged water infrastructure alone exceeded ₹29 crore, highlighting the significant economic impact of the disaster. Amid the crisis, there were appeals for coordinated support from state and central agencies to restore essential services, prevent further loss of life, and strengthen the region’s resilience against future extreme weather events.
