On September 4, 2025, the Democratic Republic of the Congo declared an outbreak of Ebola in the southern Kasai Province, marking the country's first Ebola outbreak in three years. The outbreak is centered in the Bulape and Mweka health zones, near the Angolan border. As of September 14, 2025, health authorities reported 81 confirmed cases and 28 deaths, including four healthcare workers. The outbreak is attributed to the Zaire ebolavirus strain and is believed to be a new zoonotic spillover event, not linked to previous outbreaks in the region.

In response to the outbreak, the World Health Organization (WHO) initiated a vaccination campaign targeting frontline health workers and individuals who have been in contact with confirmed Ebola cases. An initial 400 doses of the Ervebo vaccine were delivered to Bulape, with an additional 45,000 doses approved for deployment. However, logistical challenges and recent reductions in international aid may hinder response efforts.

The outbreak has raised concerns about potential regional spread, especially to neighboring Angola. Authorities have restricted public movement and established checkpoints around Tshikapa, the provincial capital, to contain the virus. Despite the challenges, local officials report that at least one patient's health is improving, offering hope amid the crisis.
