As of September 5, 2025, the Pacific region has reported over 12,000 clinically diagnosed cases of dengue, with more than 3,000 laboratory-confirmed cases. The majority of cases are linked to the DENV-1 strain. Samoa has been particularly affected, with over 12,000 cases reported. The World Health Organization (WHO) and local health authorities are mobilizing resources to respond to the outbreak.
Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection causing a severe flu-like illness and sometimes leading to potentially lethal complications known as severe dengue. The Western Pacific Region continues to face a high burden of mosquito-borne diseases, particularly dengue. These diseases cause significant morbidity and mortality.
In response to the outbreak, health authorities are implementing vector control measures, including the use of insecticides and the elimination of mosquito breeding sites. Public health campaigns are being conducted to educate communities about the symptoms of dengue and the importance of seeking medical care early. Efforts are also underway to strengthen surveillance and improve access to healthcare services in affected areas.
