In the past two days, severe flash floods have devastated parts of Gansu Province in northwestern China, particularly in Yuzhong County. Triggered by intense, sustained rainfall starting on August 7, 2025, the floods caused rivers to overflow, landslides, and widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure. Many roads and bridges were damaged or washed away, isolating communities and hampering rescue efforts. The heavy rains led to swollen rivers breaking their banks, submerging villages and farmland, and causing power outages across the affected areas. Local authorities quickly declared a state of emergency, urging residents to evacuate vulnerable zones.

As of August 10, official reports confirm at least 13 deaths and 30 people missing due to the floods and mudslides. Hundreds of residents have been rescued, and thousands more evacuated to safer areas. Emergency response teams have been dispatched from multiple provinces, with the central government declaring a state of urgent rescue operations. President Xi Jinping has ordered an “all-out” effort to locate missing persons and provide relief to those affected. The Chinese military and local volunteers are actively involved in search-and-rescue missions, employing helicopters and boats to reach stranded individuals. Hospitals in nearby cities are on high alert to treat those injured or affected by waterborne illnesses.

Authorities are currently focused on search-and-rescue missions, restoring communication, and delivering food, water, and medical aid to displaced families. The flooding has caused significant disruption to daily life and economic activities in the region. Farmland has been inundated, threatening the local food supply and livelihoods of farmers. Officials warn of continued heavy rains in the coming days, raising concerns about further flooding and landslides in already vulnerable areas. Efforts are underway to reinforce dams and levees to prevent additional breaches. The government is also coordinating with meteorological agencies to provide timely weather updates to the public and ensure preparedness for possible further disasters.
